Site Visits
Site Visits are specially designed half-day tours that offer WCS 2012 participants first-hand perspectives on how policies and ideas can be implemented successfully. Hosted by diverse public sector agencies in Singapore, these visits will give participants a behind-the-scenes look at real issues while providing unique, practical learning experiences.
Note: Seats for the Site Visits are limited and available on a first-come-first-served basis.

| 1 | Marina Bay An Attractive & Sustainable Precinct |

Envisioned as a vibrant 24/7, environmentally-friendly mixed-use precinct where people live, work and play, the Master Plan for Marina Bay focuses on encouraging a mix of uses to ensure the area remains vibrant round the clock. At the Marina Bay City Gallery, visitors will learn about how Singapore's sustainable development principles and strategies have been applied and put into practice in Marina Bay. Witness how the freshwater reservoir created by the Marina Barrage, a dam spanning the Marina Channel, becomes a centrepiece in the Marina Bay area. Beyond boosting water supply, the Marina Barrage is also part of comprehensive flood control and functions as a lifestyle attraction offering a host of recreational opportunities. Participants will also explore the newly opened Gardens by the Bay, a world-class showpiece of horticulture and garden artistry. |
| 2 | Southern Ridges and beyond Leisure Planning for Singapore |

The Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Parks and Waterbodies Plan, which was exhibited in 2002, aimed to open up, connect and enhance the various green spaces in Singapore. Visit the Southern Ridges and the Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk, two initiatives which have been implemented under this plan that have greatly extended the accessibility of green spaces in this part of Singapore to the public. |
| 3 | The Liveable City Centre Greater Chinatown, where commerce, community and culture is sustained |

A walk-through the Singapore City Gallery lets visitors delve beneath the skin of the city to understand how planners designed it to balance development, heritage and nature. This is followed by a walk through Chinatown-Kreta Ayer to understand the rehabilitation of this precinct. New housing continues to be introduced in this area to encourage city centre living, so as to optimise landuse, reduce carbon footprint, and energise the city centre with its new live-in population. The tour concludes with a visit to The Pinnacle@Duxton an internationally acclaimed public housing project with a skydeck at the 50th storey linking 7 apartment blocks. Participants will learn how land use was further optimised in the city through renewal and rejuvenation programmes thus injecting new and younger communities back into a mature housing estate. |
| 4 | Developing Sustainable Towns Visit mature Toa Payoh town and new Punggol Eco-town |

See the results of multi-agency collaborative efforts to develop sustainable, liveable residential housing estates through the years. Participants will visit Toa Payoh, the first town planned and developed when the Housing and Development Board (HDB) was formed, and the youngest town, Punggol. A tour round Toa Payoh Town will show participants the results of HDB's efforts in rejuvenating old towns to ensure that facilities meet the evolving needs of residents. This is followed by visit to Punggol Eco-town, which shows the way forward for future HDB housing developments. Participants will experience a ride on the Punggol Light Rail Transit which demonstrates how the Land Transport Authority (LTA) works closely with HDB to integrate land developments with transport. This will be followed by a visit to TreeLodge, the first Eco-Precinct, and MyWaterway@Punggol, a landscaped man-made waterway which provides more waterfront housing and recreation opportunities in Punggol. |
| 5 | Green Buildings Experience the development of Singapore's built environment and our tropical green buildings in operation |

For Singapore, sustainable development remains a key national priority. The nation's target is to have at least 80 per cent of the buildings in Singapore attain the Building and Construction Authority's (BCA) Green Mark Certified rating by 2030. Through the Green Buildings tour, participants can gain a better understanding of the development of Singapore's built environment at the BCA Gallery and experience the green features of the Zero Energy Building. This is followed by visits to exemplary green projects such as the recently opened Mapletree Business City and 313@Somerset, winners of BCA's Green Mark Platinum Award. |
| 6 | Sustainable Healthcare Promoting the health of people and the environment |

There is a growing awareness of the interdependence of human health, environmental health, and health care practices. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), the first eco-friendly, Health Promoting Hospital in Singapore, cares for the health of both people and the environment. KTPH takes care of the healthcare needs of patients in a way that goes beyond providing medical services to providing the right kind of environment in and around the hospital that is both conducive and comfortable for healing. |
| 7 | Cycling the North Eastern Riverine Loop A journey through Punggol Waterfront |

Experience the North Eastern Riverine Loop, which links four parks - Sengkang Riverside Park, Punggol Park, Punggol Waterway Park and Punggol Point Park- offering residents of nearby towns new recreational and commuting possibilities. With 80 per cent of the loop running along the waterways of Sungei Pinang, Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon, the North Eastern Riverine Loop promises breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline of northeast Singapore. The 10km cycling tour will take participants through the northern part of the loop, starting from and finishing at Lorong Halus Wetland while passing through Punggol Waterway, Punggol Park Connector and Punggol Promenade. |
